Dexter Bullard was a co-founder of Plasticene in 1995 and is an
award-winning director dedicated to creating new and original theater
for Chicago. He was recently awarded the Lucille Lortel Award for
Outstanding Direction Off-Broadway and a 2004 Drama Desk Nomination
for
Outstanding Director both for Tracy Letts' BUG at Barrow Street
Theater. With the Plasticene company, he has directed and
collaboratively created original works including DOORSLAM, REFUGE,
VOLUME XII, COME LIKE SHADOWS…, HEAD POSION, AND SO I MAY RETURN,
THE
PALMER RAIDS, FLIGHT, and BLANKSLATE. Since 1996, Dexter has also
directed with The Second City, developing revues at E.T.C. Chicago at
Second City Detroit. For three years, he led the Second City National
Touring Company to many destinations including Vienna and the Piccolo
Spoleto Festival in Charleston. Back in 1990, Dexter founded The Next
Lab at The Next Theatre where he directed BOUNCERS, for which he
received a Jefferson Citation and an After Dark award for his
direction. While at Next Theatre and Next Lab, he directed and created
over eight shows as Associate Artistic Director. He also directed with
Famous Door, American Theatre Company, and many times with A Red Orchid
Theatre. Dexter is Head of Acting at The Theatre School at DePaul
University. He teaches improvisation at Second City's Training Center
and physical theater with Plasticene.
